Many mobile phones affected with malware

LSS-NEWS-2010-010Almost 3000 HTC Magic phones were infected with malware which infected their memory cards.

The problem was discovered by an employee of Panda Security organization when he plugged a newly ordered phone into a computer with operating system Windows. Upon further investigation it was found that phone contained a client for the Mariposa botnet, the Conficker worm as well as a password stealer for the Lineage game. The malware programs were located on microSD memory card which mounts as an external drive when plugged into a computer. This allowed Mariposa botnet client, which was at one of the largest botnets on the Internet, to run automatically. Conficker autorun capability may have been disabled by Mariposa, and the password-stealing program would run only if user clicked infected file. It is unclear how the batch of memory cards became infected, but a spokesman for Vodafone organization said that there are no problems with HTC Magic phones or Android OS and that malware only affected phones sold in Spain. Vodafone will send new memory card and security software to all users whose phones or computer were infected with described malware. For additional information users should visit Yahoo!News web site.
