Worrying report about spam

A report from MAAGW (Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group) organization brings statistical information about unwanted mail messages or spam.
These are e-mail messages that overwhelm recipients e-mail inbox, and represent unexpected and junk mail. Experts say that over 80 % users are aware of the existence of botnets, but tens of millions of them still respond to spam in ways that could leave them vulnerable to a malware infection. Also, half of users opened spam, clicked on a link in them, opened attachment, replied or forwarded it, but only one-third believed that they were infected. Statistics showed that almost half of those who opened spam did that intentionally, with 25 per cent of them wanting to unsubscribe or complain to the sender, 18 per cent wanted to see what will happen and 15 per cent were interested in the product. Main problem is that users hold their Internet service provider most responsible for stopping viruses and malware, while they should take a key role in fight against those threats. Mikko Hypponen, CTO at F-Secure, claimed that there is a particular problem with awareness of users, and that spam is travelling too easily on social networks because of the social engineering tactics.
